In 2017, resident choreographer Samir Akika created "polaroids," a piece that took the electrifying spirit and sense of upheaval in New York’s 1970s/80s art scene as the starting point for a dance happening that quickly became a cult favorite. Nearly ten years after its premiere, Akika and Unusual Symptoms bring the spectacle back to the stage in a new version. Under the banner of New Wave, street art, and punk, they search for their own artistic underground. The audience becomes part of a multidisciplinary kaleidoscope of artistic self-assertion that unfolds on, behind, and beneath the stage—amid animal costumes, haze, and beer. The piece is framed by a quotation from photographer Nan Goldin: "My work was all about homage, because I thought they were the most beautiful people I've ever met." The new ":rewind" edition revisits the cult original and reworks it for today.
