The concert is the opening event of the 2026/27 NDR Jazz season and presents two contemporary jazz formations in a two-set format. The first set features pianist Myra Melford’s Fire and Water Quintet, associated with the current New York scene; the second presents French bandoneonist Louise Jallu with her JEU ensemble. Melford’s quintet combines composed themes, spontaneous interaction and collective playing, with an artistic frame connected to Cy Twombly’s drawings and the “Gaeta Set (For the Love of Fire & Water)” series. Jallu’s bandoneon-led JEU ensemble extends beyond the established Piazzolla tradition and incorporates sound worlds associated with Robert Schumann, Georges Brassens, Johann Sebastian Bach and Maurice Ravel. This is a concert presentation rather than a staged theatrical production.
