"Chayyel" is an audiovisual performance that reworks dabke through electronic sound, live image manipulation, and lighting. The sound material is built from recordings made in Beirut with Lebanese, Syrian, and Palestinian musicians using tabla, nay, mizmar, synthesizer, and voice; Rayess Bek performs the live electronic remix. Joan Baz works with live footage of dabke dancers that she filmed, using slow motion, layering, and collage. The production places the work between conflict and heritage and presents it as a way of projecting tradition into the present. The title refers to a dabke cue asking the musician to improvise and serves as a metaphor for fluid identities. Rayess Bek is credited with live electronics, Joan Baz with video montage, and Rima Ben Brahim with lighting design.
