About this event

Liberté [trigger warning] is an original drama written and directed by Georgian theatre director Data Tavadze for the Royal District Theatre. The production examines how power distorts language, how shame becomes a tool of control, and how propaganda affects collective consciousness. It was created in response to Georgia's 2024 government law against LGBTQ+ "propaganda" and the public rallies that followed. The production premiered in Georgia in 2024 and can now only be performed abroad. Its staging combines documentary fragments about the history of revolutions with physical theatre and an immersive spatial arrangement that places the audience close to the performers. The historical frame references the French and October Revolutions while considering the language of freedom under oppression. Music is by Nika Pasuri, set design by Ketevan Nadibaidze, and costume design by Simon Machabeli.
