Orpheus and Eurydice at the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre is Gluck’s opera in a production directed by the theatre’s chief stage director, Irina Lychagina. The staging connects the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice’s tragic love with the real history of 1793: friends and servants perform Gluck’s opera as a farewell spectacle before leaving the palace. A parallel is drawn between Orpheus descending into the underworld for his beloved and Count Fersen’s efforts to save Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. In the Berlioz 1859 version, the role of Orpheus is traditionally sung by a woman, a mezzo-soprano.
