About this event

Den Jyske Opera’s 2026 staging presents a modern, probing interpretation of Bizet’s Carmen. It examines Carmen’s psychology and the tension between her opening claim to be “free as a bird” and her ultimate decision to meet the fate she foresees at the hands of a man she knows may kill her. The direction links the opera’s jealousy and fatal attraction to current social realities, noting that one in five murders in Denmark is committed by a current or former partner. In this reading, Carmen stands for all women who become victims of intimate partner violence, asking the audience to reflect on how such tragedies persist. The production highlights female leadership—conductor, director, and the singer in the title role are all women—and is sung entirely in Danish to deepen local connection. An introductory talk is offered in the auditorium at 18:45 before the performance.
