This is a concert presentation of the 17th-century Baroque style known as stylus phantasticus. The style is free-form and unbound by rules, with music moving between ideas and drawing on the energy of improvisation. The programme forms a chronological and geographical survey, moving from Venice to Vienna, London and North Germany. It combines ensemble sonatas, a lament, a harpsichord toccata, string fantasias, a chaconne, theatre music and keyboard repertoire. The instrumental ensemble is led musically from the harpsichord by Lars Ulrik Mortensen. No staged dramatic action or scenic concept is described.
