About this event
American Icons is a three-part ballet program by City Ballet of San Diego featuring works choreographed by George Balanchine, Peter Martins and Gerald Arpino. It closes the company's dance series associated with America's 250th anniversary and presents three 20th-century ballets in the order Concerto Barocco, Ash and Light Rain. The staging combines contrasting choreographic approaches rather than presenting a single narrative production. Concerto Barocco uses Balanchine's choreography for Bach's Double Violin Concerto; Ash is Peter Martins' work to Michael Torke's score; and Light Rain is Gerald Arpino's ballet to music by Douglas Adamz and Russ Gauthier. City Ballet identifies Concerto Barocco and Ash as revivals and Light Rain as a San Diego premiere. A free pre-performance lecture by Artistic Director Steven Wistrich begins 45 minutes before each performance. The program is subject to change, and production support from the National Endowment for the Arts is stated on the official City Ballet page.
