About this event

Maarja Nuut presents the large-scale song cycle Liivast juukseid kammides, performed with the British vocal ensemble Shards and Swiss percussionist Nicolas Stocker. The instrumentation combines vocal ensemble, percussion, violin and electronics. The production brings together voice, spoken or poetic material, electronics, percussion and violin. Its stated artistic focus is the human inner world in a fragmented and changing time, with sound, language, silence and transformed field recordings merging into one another. The work's textual basis includes poems by Eha Lättemäe, Ilmar Laaban, Tõnis Vilu, Hasso Krull, Mehis Heinsaar and Maarja Nuut. The material began as a work intended for chamber choir in autumn 2022 and changed in ensemble and sound during the creative process. The vocal writing uses contrasting vocal qualities and moments in which the voice functions as a space or material, while Stocker's percussion contributes to the broader structure and dramaturgical development.
