About this event

Keith Warner directs the Karlsruhe production. The staging relocates the action approximately one hundred years into the future, after severe climate damage has affected the earth. The air is sufficiently polluted that people must wear gas masks outdoors. The community lives in containers at a former research site and survives on the proceeds of wrecking and looting ships. There are very few children, and Jack, described as the last child, is treated almost like a small god. The setting connects the opera's coastal survival economy with environmental collapse and scarcity. The staging contrasts an Apollonian order represented by the church and its strict rules with a Dionysian sphere represented by the tavern and its uninhibited social life. The production treats the work as a psychological drama about power struggles, love, sexual desire, violence, and competing systems of social control.
