Crimi "Meli" – Opéra Nouvel de Lyon, Lyon

About this event

Crimi "Meli" is presented as a new concert creation led by Julien Lesuisse and the group Crimi. The production uses songs, poems, and dances to explore the idea of a southern-European Maghreb, combining original material with Sicilian work songs. Lesuisse's use of Sicilian, inherited from his grandmother, connects with songs and rhythms from southern Italy, Oran rai, cheikhate, and related musical traditions. Exile, memory, the urgency to create, the intensity of life, and love are central themes. The musical practice is experimental and improvisational, combining Sicilian tambourine, western Algerian gallal, contemporary groove, and modal or harmonic interplay.
