About this event

This is an Operakoor Bel Canto production of Bizet's opera, directed by Jeroen Lopes Cardozo. It uses the original version of the work and places the story in an imagined pre-colonial Sri Lanka before 1500, where Hinduism and Buddhism coexist. The design presents a materially poor but stable society with basic food, clothing, and shelter, conditions that influence the visual design and acting style. The production includes theatrical projections, costumes, ritual, Hindustani dance, and an intimate presentation. Professional solo singers perform with the Bel Canto opera choir, accompanied by the Utrechtse MuziekAcademie under Marco Bons. The opera is sung in French with Dutch surtitles.
