Arguably the most popular fairy-tale opera—often a first opera experience for many children and at the same time a musical treat for connoisseurs. Engelbert Humperdinck, a pupil and assistant of Richard Wagner, succeeded in uniting seemingly irreconcilable opposites: a familiar fairy-tale plot with melodies that live on as children’s songs, and an artistically rich, multi-colored orchestral sound; grand opera with romantic evocations of nature and dramatic human conflicts. And as in many fairy tales, good dreams finally triumph over evil, and childlike imagination and thirst for adventure prevail over hardship and poverty. In addition to the complete opera in the evening and afternoon, there is a shortened morning version: with large orchestra, almost all soloists, and the Father as narrator.
