About this event

This is David McVicar's production and set design for Cherubini's opera, with costumes by Doey Lüthi, lighting by Paule Constable, projections by S. Katy Tucker, and movement direction by Jo Meredith. The production is a co-production of the Metropolitan Opera, Greek National Opera, Canadian Opera Company, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. The staging frames the action in Corinth, a wealthy and sophisticated Greek city that is already ancient at the time of the story. Medea is presented as a foreigner from Colchis, associated in the Greek imagination with wealth, primitiveness, and overly empowered women. The production retells the Greek myth of a sorceress betrayed by her unfaithful lover, culminating in the deaths of her two children. It uses Carlo Zangarini's Italian translation, a hybrid version revived for Maria Callas in 1953.
