About this event

Bach in Space is a multimedia concert project by MuenchenMusik GmbH & Co.KG that pairs the music of Johann Sebastian Bach with original NASA and ESA footage. A large screen presents high‑resolution images of distant galaxies, nebulae, and black holes while live piano selections from Bach’s core keyboard works are performed. Originally developed for Munich’s Prinzregententheater, the production has been touring Germany, Austria, and Switzerland since the 2025/26 season. The visual thread follows a dramaturgical arc from crossing the Alps and leaving Earth’s atmosphere to the depths of space; the musical choices are curated so that intimate, powerful, and delicate pieces complement the respective image sequences. For the Essen performance, pianist Danae Dörken takes on the musical role; other tour dates feature Mona Asuka. Running time is 75 minutes without intermission. The presenter notes that the event is excluded from the TUPcard offer.
