About this event

Red Wedding Bed is a co-production of the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Fujian Province Liyuan Opera Inheritance Centre. Based on the Liyuan classic 陈三五娘, it combines traditional performance practice with modern dramaturgy. The production places Liyuan Opera within a tradition described as nearly nine centuries old and associated with Song-Yuan southern theatre. The staging is organized around the named excerpt 大闷 from the ancient text 陈三. On the right side of the stage, scenes from the East China version of the classic are presented in sequence, creating a play-within-a-play. The structure connects Wuniang's longing with dream and memory and establishes an exchange between the dramatic world and the world outside it. The seven role types of the traditional qiziban ensemble move between the two theatrical worlds. Black-clad figures clear the stage, play secondary roles, and demonstrate traditional performance conventions, making the transmission of Liyuan Opera part of the stage action.
