About this event
The Family is presented as an original Kun Opera work on a modern, realist subject, adapted from Ba Jin's novel of the same title. Its formal structure uses two-way storytelling: the characters from the novel and the author are both part of the narrative frame. The production interweaves Ba Jin's life with the destinies of characters including Juexin and Juehui. It uses the refined, flowing cadences of Kun Opera to interpret Ba Jin's creative experience and classic scenes from the novel, connecting the author's life with the fictional family's experience. Juexin's growth is the principal narrative thread. Yu Jiulin plays the dual roles of Juexin and Li Yaomei, and the production focuses on the conflicts within a feudal family and the defiant spirit of the younger generation.
