About this event

The production adapts Tang Xianzu's The Peony Pavilion into a contemporary dance drama. Li Xing and Huang Jiayuan are credited as co-directors. The production condenses the source's 55 scenes into two linked structures, the Dream Scroll and the Painted Scroll. Its central dramatic principle is the idea of emotion carrying Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei beyond life and death. The staging moves between dream and reality through suggestive emptiness, imagery associated with Suzhou gardens, an extended stage and drifting mist. Movement and visual design combine water-sleeve technique, pointe work and contemporary dance, with white walls, golden-brick imagery and a Flower Spirit group representing elements of nature.
