About this event
This is a Spanish dance production of Carmen by Antonio Gades and Carlos Saura. Carmen embodies a woman's struggle for freedom against social conventions. The production recovers the character's Spanish identity from an external, stereotyped gaze, portraying a woman who gives herself fully without betraying her essential independence. Flamenco is the principal physical and dramatic language. The staging contrasts the intensity of Bizet's score with the sensuality, passion, love and rivalry of live flamenco, while incorporating recorded music by Bizet, Penella, and Ortega Heredia and Lorca. Scene transitions include cinematic references associated with Carlos Saura. The current company presentation is under the artistic direction of Stella Arauzo.
