This is a solo piano recital by Finnish pianist Joonas Ahonen. The program places Beethoven's large-scale Diabelli Variations alongside two contemporary works, creating a chronological and stylistic arc from nineteenth-century musical time to contemporary avant-garde practice. The first part centers on Beethoven's 33 Diabelli Variations, Op. 120, a technically and interpretively demanding work in which an original waltz is transformed through contrasting episodes ranging from rapid virtuosity to introspection and culminating in a large fugue. After the intermission, Eric Wubbels' Nueva York is presented as a Mexican premiere. Raphaël Languillat's flagellation ii (torso) closes the program, connecting the piano writing to Caravaggio's chiaroscuro through an obsessive, violent and sculptural pulse. The recital is presented as a single pianist-led program rather than a staged theatrical production.
