About this event
The production is a revival and new staging of the dance drama Dagger Society, which premiered in 1959. Its historical setting is the 1853 Small Swords Society Uprising in Shanghai, and the primary event page frames the work around resistance to imperialist and feudal oppression. The Shanghai Opera House production preserves the earlier work's spirit and Chinese dance-theatre characteristics while reworking its historical narrative through contemporary dance vocabulary and stagecraft. It combines Jiangnan folk music, traditional opera, martial-arts technique, and traditional dance sections with a renewed visual language.
