About this event

This dance drama takes Draft of a Requiem to My Nephew as its creative core. Through Yan Zhenqing's recollections as he writes the elegy, it connects the calligrapher's turbulent life with his devotion to family and country. The movement structure follows five qualities of brush and ink: moistening the ink, setting down the brush, driving the brush forward, drying out the ink, and exhausting the ink. These stages provide the production's organizing form rather than a conventional linear biography. The staging brings calligraphic technique, human emotion, and historical upheaval into one dance language, using dance to illuminate Yan Zhenqing's integrity and loyalty while presenting traditional Chinese culture through a contemporary stage form.
