Teatro La Fenice brings a new production of Puccini's Tosca to Shanghai. Juan Anton Rechi directs the production, which has entered Teatro La Fenice's permanent repertoire. The staging relocates the story from Rome in 1800 to a modern 1950s setting. Its artistic focus is the relationship between freedom and human nature and humanity's continuing pursuit of liberty. The production replaces the traditionally enclosed setting with an open space, using spatial design to reinforce freedom as its central theme. A related Venice review describes a nameless 1950s dictatorship, outdoor spaces, darker colors, scaffolding, staircases, a car and a maze-like staircase in the third act; these details are not separately confirmed as Shanghai-specific alterations.
