Drama Hamlet And More By Beijing People's Art Theatre – Zhongguo Da Xiyuan, Shanghai

About this event

Beijing People's Art Theatre presents its first small-theater production of Hamlet, reinterpreting Shakespeare's classic with an entirely youth cast. The production moves beyond the conventional emphasis on a prince's revenge and focuses on the uncertainties of growing up and the spiritual questions faced by young people today. The performers take on multiple roles, with rapid transitions reshaping relationships among the characters and making the connections among identity, the self, and truth part of the staging structure. A play-within-a-play, audience interaction, live music, and other theatrical devices give the classic text a contemporary, modern, and playful stage language.
