This is a concert performance of Mahler's Second Symphony by Sir Simon Rattle, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks. The soloists are soprano Lucy Crowe and mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill, with Peter Dijkstra credited for chorus preparation. The production is a full performance of one large-scale symphonic work rather than a staged theatre production. Mahler's score uses a large orchestra, mixed chorus, soprano and alto solo, and unfolds across five connected movements. The artistic focus is Mahler's question of how to tell the story of the end and what may lie beyond it, progressing from a funeral march through memories, doubt and visions toward a choral conclusion about transience, hope and the longing for meaning.
