About this event

This concert presents five Jewish composers, many of them Eastern European émigrés to the United States, working during the rise of the Jazz Age. The program traces different responses to jazz and changing musical environments, moving from Waghalter's pre-World War I European style through Saminsky's critique, Toch's European avant-garde assimilation, Gruenberg's fusion of jazz and classical form, and Gershwin's American response to Europe. Leon Botstein conducts, Mira Wang is the violin soloist, and an unnamed TŌN musician gives brief remarks. The same concert is presented at the Fisher Center and Carnegie Hall and is also livestreamed on TŌNtube.
