About this event
Ne Carmen! is a contemporary theatrical deconstruction of Georges Bizet’s Carmen. An ensemble of ten actors and a live pianist ask what it means to stage Carmen today, using a play-within-a-play frame to expose patterns of oppression reproduced by theatre itself. The work examines class relations, othering, misogyny, stereotypes, and femicide—dynamics that often go unseen by audiences but are felt in rehearsal rooms and backstage. It questions whether the aim of a “good production” can ever justify psychological or physical violence, and how those who remain in theatre are shaped by such experiences. Bizet’s music and motifs are woven through deconstructed opera, song, choreography, and text. The ensemble alternates between functioning as a choir or dance troupe and breaking into pairs, groups, or solos. In doing so, the production interrogates both the canonical status of Carmen and the power structures behind making theatre.
