Witch Hillary Goes to the Opera is a popular children’s performance from the Opera of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, directed by Ivan Leo Lemo from a text by Peter Lund. Since its 2010 Zagreb premiere, it has toured widely across Croatia with more than a hundred shows, introducing young audiences to what opera is and how it works. The story follows Hillary, a curious witch who lives online and suddenly wins tickets to the opera. Unsure what opera is, she summons the singer Maria Bellacanta, who explains that opera tells magical stories through singing. With a conjured piano for accompaniment, Maria performs arias by Mozart, Gounod, Donizetti, and Verdi, while Hillary learns about composers, notation, singers, instrumentalists, chorus, and the conductor. By evening’s end, Hillary discovers that opera is the greatest magic of all. The production won Best Performance at the 11th Naj, naj, naj Festival (2011), where Dora Lipovčan also received Best Actress for her role as Witch Hillary.
