Macbeth - Von Heiner Müller Nach Shakespeare – Badische State Theater Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe

About this event

Macbeth is a 1972 adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy by the playwright Heiner Müller. The Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe production premiered on 6 November 2026 in the Kleines Haus and is recommended for ages 15 and up. In the story, the Scottish nobleman Macbeth reaches for the crown after a prophecy. He murders King Duncan and clears his path to power. His wife, Lady Macbeth, drives, supports, and challenges him. Yet the murder is not an end but the beginning of a chain of further violence, as each new killing creates fresh insecurity. The story ends in chaos. Where Shakespeare still shows a protagonist tormented by conscience and opens a view into his inner life and imagination, Heiner Müller’s adaptation discovers a merciless mechanism. Murder follows murder, violence begets violence. Nothing but hardship and death await those who serve as cannon fodder for the rulers. The result is a dystopian image of a world revolving solely around struggle, power, and survival—without hope or utopia.
