“1st Children’s Concert – Pictures at an Exhibition” is a hosted family concert by Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe for ages 6 and up. It focuses on Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition in Maurice Ravel’s famous orchestral version. The point of departure is the 1874 exhibition of painter and sculptor Viktor Hartmann in St. Petersburg, which inspired Mussorgsky to take a musical promenade through the gallery and render the images in sound. Stops on this musical tour include the hut on fowl’s legs (Baba Yaga), the gnome, the Great Gate of Kyiv, the Tuileries, a French marketplace, an old castle, the “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks,” and the dark Roman catacombs. Ravel, a master orchestrator, transformed the piano original into a vibrant orchestral score. The Badische Staatskapelle performs while a moderator guides the audience through the pictures and their stories—an ideal, image-rich introduction to the symphonic orchestra for young listeners.
