saufen fechten heidelberg is a research-based immersive theatre piece by the collective Institut für Kontrolle und Exzess, founded at Theater und Orchester Heidelberg in 2022. The team investigated Heidelberg’s student fraternities, speaking with current members, activists, dropouts, and alumni, and reports being invited into a fraternity house. Staged in the Amtsstuebl at Verein Alt-Heidelberg, the production blurs the line between stage and audience through songs, bar service, and direct conversations. Strobe lighting and loud music are used. Thematically it examines close friendship tipping into toxic masculinity, cherished rituals versus outdated conventions, and the nexus of drinking, dueling, honor, and degrading violence. Racism, sexism, and antisemitism are addressed on a linguistic level, while alcohol abuse is depicted on stage. The entire evening is carried by solo performer Leon Wieferich.
