Since 1989, Werner Holzwarth’s picture book “The Little Mole Who Wanted to Know Who Pooped on His Head” has delighted young and old. The tale of a small mole hunting for a mysterious culprit blends childlike curiosity, humor, and a wonderful sound world. In 2022, Elisabeth Naske turned it into an enchanting piece of music theatre for the very young, giving the lovable mole a musical companion: a viola. In Theater Heidelberg’s staging, the mole’s search becomes a sensual experience of voice and string sound that gently introduces children, even from their earliest years, to live music. With just two singers and two violas, the production unfolds a surprising musical richness; the stage becomes a garden full of animals, each with its own timbre and musical theme. Children discover how colors of sound can express feelings, how musical call-and-response works, and how a supposed “culprit” can lead to a reconciled togetherness in the end.
