SOMNOLE (2021) is Boris Charmatz’s first solo after a long line of group pieces and collective events. The stage is pared back to essentials: a single body that both dances and whistles, with breath shaping sound and movement at once. Charmatz calls it a “whistled dance,” a mental, stripped-back choreography in which exhalation becomes the delicate bond between dance and music. The dramaturgy unfolds through familiar melodies and concrete gestures held in a dozing state. One note, then a melody, then another: a terrain of refrains from which gestures escape, a fleeting map of a brain-state. As tunes mix, break, and re-form, different modes of connection emerge between breath and movement dynamics—slowed, jerky, drowsy, razor-edged—like a body seeking rest while inventing an insomniac dance. The staging is deliberately austere. Lighting (Yves Godin), costume collaboration (Marion Regnier), and vocal work (Dalila Khatir) frame a single body in space. The performance includes scenes of nudity.
