About this event
The concert “Feuervogel” is part of the “MDR Concerts in the Evening” series and is performed by the MDR Symphony Orchestra in the Great Concert Hall of the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, conducted by Stephanie Childress. The program focuses entirely on Russian orchestral music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, highlighting folk tales, mythology, and magical themes. It opens with three works by Anatoly Lyadov (Kikimora, Baba Yaga, The Enchanted Lake), followed by the suite from Sergei Prokofiev’s opera The Love for Three Oranges. The centerpiece is Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird (suite, 1911 version), a seminal work of Russian ballet and a brilliantly colored score of early modernism. The curation traces figures from Russian folklore and culminates in the Firebird’s finale, where good triumphs over evil.
