Two operas in one evening—both address the audience directly in epilogue and prologue, and both deal with love and death. In Gianni Schicchi a rich family becomes cheated cheaters: with wit and charm he outwits the money-grubbing relatives of a deceased man and helps a young couple find happiness. In Pagliacci, play and reality mix in dangerous ways: a traveling troupe performs the comedy about Columbina, who deceives her husband. But in real life the actress likewise begins an extramarital affair. The horrified spectators of the comedians’ theatre witness how the scene on stage turns into bloody reality. Both composers find the characteristic tone for their operas: for Leoncavallo, gripping drama; for Puccini—unlike in his other works—a light, witty, caricaturing tone in which only the young couple is granted melting melodies.
