This staging marks the third time New Village Arts has produced As You Like It in its 25-year history, returning the show to the company's roots after it debuted in the inaugural 2001 season. Directed by Founder & Executive Artistic Director Kristianne Kurner, the production presents Shaina Taub and Laurie Woolery’s musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy, preserving Shakespeare’s verse while pairing it with Taub’s original folk-pop score. Developed for The Public Theater’s Public Works in 2017, the adaptation was hailed by The New York Times and named among the year’s best shows. The piece reimagines the Forest of Arden through a folk-pop lens and reframes themes of exile, disguise, gender, and love through music. True to New Village Arts’ community-rooted approach, this intimate Carlsbad Village staging brings the popular musical to the Ray Charles Stage. The work is licensed by Concord Theatricals. Creative team and cast beyond the director will be announced by New Village Arts.
