About this event

Lyric drama by Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924), inspired by Carlo Gozzi’s 1762 theatrical fairy tale. The opera was left unfinished at the composer’s death, breaking off after Liù’s suicide, and was completed by Franco Alfano from Puccini’s original sketches. The premiere was conducted in 1926 by Arturo Toscanini at Teatro alla Scala. Turandot, the emperor’s daughter, is a cruel princess who hates men and, to avoid marriage, forces every suitor to solve three riddles under penalty of beheading. Calaf, a Tartar prince in love with her, succeeds, leaving the princess shaken. He then proposes a challenge: if she discovers his name before dawn, he will give up his life. After futile attempts (the slave Liù, in love with Calaf, keeps silent and kills herself), the prince decides to reveal his name himself. Turandot, now conquered by love, tells her father the stranger’s name: “Amor.”
