About this event

David Boesch’s “Graphic Opera” creates an independent form of music theatre that fuses live performance, film, and animation. The set is papered with enlarged pages from Anne Frank’s diary, while a pop-up picture book reveals the cramped spaces of the Secret Annex at Prinsengracht 263 in Amsterdam. Video projections illustrate and comment on the action: cut-out figures march through scenes, a swastika swings like a death knell, and animations interact with newsreel footage and quotations from Nazi decrees. The perspective of young Anne is central. Her perception shapes the world we see—at times concrete and observant, at times fragmentary and inward. Between confinement and imagination, a visually opulent yet intimate theatrical experience unfolds that does not merely recount history but makes it tangible.
