Cantatrix malefica is an original solo conceived by Isabelle Cals and Philippe Arlaud — a lyrical and theatrical evening, novelistic and joyfully offbeat. Scored for soprano and piano, the piece blends opera and theatre in a fully staged creation with direction, set, and lighting by Philippe Arlaud. The Cantatrix, a timeless witch figure, lively, lucid, and rich in self‑irony, inhabits her refuge — an opera dressing room — from which she slips through eras and incarnations. Through a mirror, the great witches of opera appear (the Hexe from Humperdinck, Ježibaba from Dvořák, Ortrud and Kundry from Wagner, Médée from Cherubini). Rejecting demonic or folkloric clichés, the work paints the essential portrait of a free, independent, sovereign woman, leading audiences through a maze of stories, music, and historical echoes.
