About this event

Drawing on the myth of the vengeful Willis—spirits familiar from the ballet Giselle—Puccini’s Le Villi was his first opera, written fresh out of the conservatory for a Milanese competition. Though it lost the prize, the score caught the eye of publisher Ricordi, leading to Puccini’s next commission. With the support of Arrigo Boito, Le Villi was staged in Milan and soon won acclaim; it was later conducted by Mahler and Toscanini. In Marseille, Alexandra Marcellier sings Anna, with Thomas Bettinger as Roberto and Marc Scoffoni as Guglielmo. This new production is conceived by Stefano Poda, who designs the staging, sets, costumes, lighting, and choreography, in artistic collaboration with Paolo Giani. Paolo Arrivabeni leads the performance, with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Opéra de Marseille. An accessibility option using vibrating vests is available by reservation for the Sunday 15 November performance.
