About this event

Roman Borisov is presented as part of the "Debüt im Nikolaisaal" series, in which he appears as the venue's featured debut pianist. The chamber-music programme pairs three pillars of the cello-and-piano literature. Janáček's Pohádka ("Fairy Tale") opens the evening: in three poetic musical scenes the cello takes the role of Prince Ivan and the piano the role of Princess Marja. Beethoven's late Cello Sonata No. 5 in D major, op. 102/2 — the composer's final cello sonata — combines sophisticated variation writing, lyrical inwardness and richly layered rhythm. Rachmaninoff's Sonata in G minor, op. 19, the towering Romantic cello sonata, showcases the composer's dual identity as pianist and composer: every page of the piano part is as virtuosic as the cello line. The programming is also a deliberate continuation of the Beethoven-plus-Rachmaninoff pairing that Borisov premiered to critical acclaim at his September 2025 debut in Potsdam. A post-concert talk with the artists follows in the foyer.
