The Fountain of Bakhchisarai is staged by the Romanian National Opera in Cluj-Napoca as a four-act ballet. Based on Alexander Pushkin’s narrative poem and the legend of the Fountain of Tears in the Crimean Tatar palace at Bakhchisarai, the story follows Khan Ghirei’s impossible love for the captive Polish princess Maria, her steadfast refusal, and the jealous rage of his favourite, Zarema. Passion, faith, and vengeance collide in a tragic arc where love turns to loss and memory endures forever. The production contrasts two worlds—the mysterious, passionate East and the serene, idealised Europe—while Asafiev’s dramatic score drives dance-led storytelling and rich scenography.
