About this event
Chelsea Opera Group presents Ambroise Thomas’s grand opera Hamlet as a concert performance, sung in the original French with English surtitles. A dark and sweeping take on Shakespeare’s tragedy, the work was an immediate critical and popular success after its 1868 Paris premiere and is renowned for the dazzling coloratura role of Ophélie, championed by sopranos from Nellie Melba to Joan Sutherland. The performance, conducted by Jonathon Cole-Swinard in his COG debut, features the Chelsea Opera Group Chorus and Orchestra, with a pre-concert talk at 4:15 pm by Simon Bainbridge. A closed orchestral rehearsal at The Warehouse on 20 October 2026 (19:00–22:00) forms part of the preparation for the Cadogan Hall concert on 1 November 2026.
