Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Chatterton opens the I Pomeriggi Musicali 2026–2027 82nd Symphony Season as an “Preview” inaugural event. It is presented in concert performance, without sets, costumes or stage direction, yet in the complete musical version with orchestra and singers on stage. Conductor Andreas Gies leads the Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali di Milano in a rare title: Leoncavallo’s first opera (1876), revised and premiered only in 1896 after the success of Pagliacci and long neglected since. The programming underscores the orchestra’s identity in rediscovering late‑19th‑century Italian repertoire alongside the classical and late‑romantic canon. The performance takes place in the Sala Grande of Teatro Dal Verme, the institution’s historic home, in a format that offers an intimate listening experience where music and voice are central—true to the season’s inaugural‑concert nature.
