About this event

Deutsche Oper am Rhein revives Barrie Kosky and 1927’s cult staging of Mozart’s The Magic Flute: a “singing silent film” where live singers interact precisely with Paul Barritt’s hand‑drawn animated world on a vast projection wall. Spoken dialogue is replaced by silent‑movie intertitles, while Mozart’s keyboard Fantasies in C minor (K.475) and D minor (K.397) are performed live on an 18th‑century clavichord to bridge scenes. The imagery quotes 1920s cinema, vaudeville and comic strips: Papageno nods to Buster Keaton, Monostatos to Nosferatu, and Pamina to Louise Brooks. Esther Bialas designs sets and costumes; lighting is by Diego Leetz. The result is a magical, living fairy‑tale book suitable for audiences aged 8 and up.
