Waiting for Beckett is a devised piece by Max Merker and Aaron Hitz in collaboration with dramaturg Martin Bieri. This physical-comedy work fuses Beckett’s question of waiting with slapstick and existential clowning. It draws on the legend that Samuel Beckett envisioned Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy as ideal performers for Waiting for Godot. After Hardy’s death, Laurel kept writing scripts for the duo—as if waiting for his partner’s return—an idea that forms the conceptual core of the production. A piano that seems to play by itself, a flying cream pie, and two men who have forgotten why they met power a humorous evening about loneliness and its overcoming.
