The "Claude Debussy: La mer" program in the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos 2026–2027 season brings together four core works of early French modernism as a frame for one Portuguese voice shaped by the same aesthetic currents. The Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, conducted by Joseph Swensen, sets Debussy’s Prélude à l’après‑midi d’un faune (1894) and La mer (1905) and Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte (1899) alongside Luís de Freitas Branco’s Violin Concerto (1916), performed by Carlos Damas, the soloist of the work’s Parisian premiere. The program advances a clear curatorial thesis: within a single evening, to trace the creative ebullience of early modernism, the breaking of limits, cross‑artistic dialogue, and the quest for a new musical language. Presentation by musicologist Filipe Gaspar. Because TNSC’s main building is closed for rehabilitation (PRR), the concert is staged outside the house on two dates at two venues: Teatro Camões (Lisbon) and Centro Cultural Olga Cadaval (Sintra).
