Orchestral Symphony Concert
The Berliner Philharmoniker and Iván Fischer pair Haydn’s late Sinfonia concertante in B-flat, Hob. I:105 with Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. Haydn’s score places four Philharmoniker principals—Noah Bendix-Balgley (violin), Bruno Delepelaire (cello), Jonathan Kelly (oboe) and Stefan Schweigert (bassoon)—in a lively, witty dialogue with the orchestra. After a 20-minute interval, Fischer turns to Mahler’s five-movement Fifth, renowned for its radiant Adagietto—a musical declaration of love to Alma—and for a journey that moves between mourning and optimism, anxiety and vitality, doubt and tenderness. Fischer, among the foremost Mahler interpreters, is praised in Berlin for readings that combine transparency with emotional depth. The programme is heard three times in the Philharmonie’s Großer Saal, with a pre-concert introduction 45 minutes before each performance; the Saturday concert is additionally streamed in the Digital Concert Hall.
