Heinrich von Kleist’s 1806 comedy The Broken Jug has long been a staple of German-language theatre. At Lucerne Theatre, the piece is newly staged in the 2026/27 season under the artistic direction of Katja Langenbach and Wanda Puvogel. Director Fritzi Wartenberg, known for award-winning work, focuses on the character of Eve and her persistent silence. Why does Eve remain silent? While theatre history offers many explanations—from social expectations and hierarchical dependency to intimidation or sexualized violence—Wartenberg finds a new reason in Kleist’s original text. The production is billed as darkly humorous and critical of power structures. Set design is by Polly Stephan, costumes by Esther Von der Decken. Musical accompaniment is by David Rimsky-Korsakow, lighting by Petri Tuhkanen, and dramaturgy by Amelie Lopper. The premiere is on 17 October 2026 on the main stage of Lucerne Theatre; recommended for ages 15 and up.
