The program juxtaposes two works that respond directly to the political upheavals surrounding the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. At its center is Haydn’s Missa in angustiis in D minor (Hob. XXII:11), popularly known as the “Nelson Mass,” composed in 1798 amid the British–French naval conflict and later associated with Admiral Horatio Nelson after his victory at Aboukir. The Mass is performed by the expanded Vox Luminis XL (four soloists and choir) with CAMERATA Salzburg; musical direction is shared by Lionel Meunier (Bass & Musical Direction) and Gregory Ahss (Violin & Musical Direction). Framing the Mass is Paul Wranitzky’s Symphony in C minor, Op. 31 “La Paix” (“Grande Symphonie caractéristique for the Peace with the French Republic”), a programmatic celebration of the 1797 peace. Together, the Mass and the symphony place the turbulent years 1797–1798 in musical dialogue—Haydn under the shadow of war, Wranitzky in the spirit of reconciliation.
